Other nations knew of the possibility of nuclear weaponry - "The Heroes of Telemark" should ring some bells. About 20 years ago I nursed a former prisoner of war of the Japanese who was working in the Tokyo docks when the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. He witnessed a fellow PoW being forced to stand in the sea up to his neck and was then kicked in the face until he collapsed and was drowned.
