Was D-Day a failure for the americans?

I just watched a program about the landings at omaha beach which included some interviewees from both sides, and by the looks of it the american landings at omaha beach they suffered heavy casualties due to poor equipment and planning, and ironically in the british sector the flail tanks smashes through the german defences with much less casulaties, while the americans who didnt have them suffered 1000s.
